SBS at the Symphony

Posted on February 23

As part of our music curriculum, our students in GR 4, 5 and 6 attended the Toronto Symphony Youth Concert. Our students enjoyed listening to the movie music particularly with our focus on John Williams this month. We also had an opportunity to see a Canadian premiere of an animated short with live music. What a thrill!

A big thank you to the SPA for supporting SBS at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and to our parent volunteers for joining us.

Skating is an element of our Phys Ed program in GR 1, 2 and 3. This year we are having great weather and lots of fun at the rink. The winter term is easier when we fill the days with great winter sports, and skating is a highlight for the kids.

Our thanks to our parent volunteers who help with lacing skates and on the ice. And to our teachers for sharing their enthusiasm for winter fun with their students!

Basketball Clinic

Posted on December 2

Basketball is a beloved element of our Phys Ed program. Students love this sport, and play it enthusiastically in class and on the playground. We are proud to send our team to the SSAF tournaments and games.

Learning to play basketball well is a welcome challenge for SBS athletes. At the annual basketball clinic at the hoop dome our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students benefit from the expertise of many coaches, as well as the wonderful facilities. This annual Phys Ed enrichment trip is hugely popular with our students. And this year our team won all 3 games! Go Wizards!

Clothing Drive

Posted on November 22

Our Kids Can Too action club holds a clothing drive each year. The donations are delivered to New Circles, a local organisation the provides a clothing bank and other services to newly arrived immigrant families.

Students collect the clothing over a week in November, assisting parents dropping off in the morning, storing the bags, and keeping everything organised. At the end of the collection period, the bags are loaded into a school bus by a chain of kids passing them through the school and out the front walk to be packed onto the bus. When they arrive at New Circles, Kids Can Too kids unload the bags, and spend the afternoon sorting clothes for the clothing bank.

Kids Can Too delivered 101 bags of clothing this year, just in time for winter!

We are proud of our students' efforts to take action locally and to know that SBS is able to make a difference for New Circles.

After Care Activites

Posted on November 17

As the days get shorter our students spend more time indoors in our After Care program. This is a good time for students from different grades to spend time playing, creating, connecting and having a good time together.

The photo above is a great snapshot of the great mood and the kind of activity among these students in SK and Grade 5.

We hold a special Sports Play Day to start our youngest students off in the Phys Ed Program. Our Grade Six House Heads guide their JK and SK peers through a variety of activities on the playground. Climbing, running, ball games and balance activities are just some of the great challenges that make up this fun day.

At this event our youngest students work through events that help them develop coordination, teamwork, stamina and a love of physical activity.

This Sports Day gives the kids a great sense of accomplishment, and helps them develop confidence as they engage in learning a variety of sports skills.
