Director's Welcome
A letter from Irene Davy
Dear Parents
Sunnybrook School is a vessel of hope, bearing the promise of the future in each child who walks through our doors. It is our aim to honour the responsibility inherent in guiding children’s learning in their most formative school years.
The foundation laid in elementary school will serve as the bedrock for further growth and learning. Balance is the key to effective education, and great care must be taken to guide each young person as they explore their world. A thoughtful elementary education incorporates a balance of skills, concepts, knowledge and values education, which will lead children to act in principles, caring ways in the world. As elementary educators, we are guardians of our students’ learning and personal growth. At Sunnybrook School this is embraced as our greatest responsibility, which will complement the work of the family.
Young children are capable of deriving so much pleasure from learning. Channeling the energy, enjoyment and enthusiasm of elementary students into a disciplined, thoughtful course of learning is a challenge we welcome at Sunnybrook School. Diversity and individuality contribute to the vitality of our school. We encourage our students to develop these qualities while learning to participate in a disciplined and considerate manner in a group.
Sunnybrook is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The IB Primary Years Programme fully enriches and complements our philosophy, and gives us a superb framework for assessment and curriculum development. Our international curriculum is designed to prepare our students for tomorrows complex challenges while giving them a solid grounding in their own heritage and culture.
Passionate teachers have the power to excite and inspire young people with the will to learn about themselves and their world. Our faculty is the core of this dynamic school, and our teachers have become innovators in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. They are effective collaborators and learners themselves and motivate their students to develop the same qualities.
Choosing an elementary school for your child can be a daunting task. This website is designed to answer some of your questions, but a website alone cannot give you the flavour of a vibrant learning community. I encourage you to come and experience the uniqueness of Sunnybrook School. I look forward to meeting you and discussing your child’s gifts and needs.
Sunnybrook has a dedicated and highly qualified faculty. The teachers at Sunnybrook work collaboratively to create a nurturing and challenging learning environment for their students. In addition to their university degrees and teacher training, our talented teachers have received extensive training in the IB PYP, both in-service and at IB workshops. Teachers represent both the heart and the backbone of a successful school. The core of a teacher ?s work is to foster learning, both in the student and in themselves. A deep understanding of how children best learn informs classroom practice at Sunnybrook School. During weekly faculty meetings, and our 15 days devoted to professional development, our team of teachers develops and refines the curricular experience of our students. They are a devoted group of professionals, who take pride in student learning and success. We are proud that five members of our staff are on the faculty of IBNA.
